Galle was known for his beautiful floral and landscape motifs on glass vase and lamps. The piece offered for sale clearly represents this. Impressive in both shape and beauty, it is adorned with an intaglio cut landscape design featuring a winter scene. Completely hand crafted with several layers of hand-blown glass, the design comes to life with the layering and etching techniques used to bring out the colours. This vase is brand new and is a high quality reproduction of an original design by Emile Galle. Cameo Glass such as this is produced in techniques similar to those used by the ancient Romans, deemed lost until a revival beginning in the 18th and continuing through the 19th century. To this day their production involves the use of cased glass, or the overlayering of several thin lays of different coloured glass. Typical designs involve two or three layers of glass and, more rarely, four or five. These are then acid-etched or wheel carved in relief of the design. The difficulty of this technique lies in the fact that the various layers must have the same dilation coefficient and the same thickness in order to avoid any breaking while the piece is cooling, or when working the glass once it is cold. The chemical composition of each coloured layer of glass is therefore crucial and kept secret. H23cm W15cm
